With the release of software updates for the Edge 530/830/1030 Plus in June 2021, several navigation enhancements have been made to improve the user experience when using a unit to navigate. This includes:
Faster Route Calculation Times
The algorithm that is used to calculate routes has been changed to speed up calculation times. Also, previously calculated routes are cached on the device allowing for very quick calculation times the next time the route is ridden.
Directional Arrows While Navigating
Directional arrows have been added while navigating to improve a rider’s understanding and the visibility of their chosen route. This is particularly helpful for a route that crosses over itself or for sections of a route that repeat on a course.
Improved Map Themes
Map themes have been improved to provide options for a cleaner look as well as to provide an increase in contrast and visibility under all light conditions. Users can choose from three different themes:
High Contrast
This new theme is the default theme for road activity profiles. Rideable roads and trails have been emphasized with high contrast dark colors.
MTB
This existing theme is the default for the MTB activity profile and emphasizes trails. Roads will appear in a lighter color.
Classic
The classic setting will display the previous look and feel that High Contract took over.
Popularity Heatmap Layer
This new map layer adds contrast to the map highlighting popular roads/trails ridden by other riders. How this layer looks will change and depend on the map theme you've chosen. To take advantage of this new feature your device will need to be running Cycle Map version 2021.10 or newer. Use Garmin Express from a personal computer to install the latest maps and software. Popularity data is updated with each update release of the Garmin Cycle Map.
You can enable/disable this feature from the Controls widget or by following these steps.
From the home screen access the Main Menu.
Select Activity Profiles.
Select the activity profile you want to adjust.
Select Navigation.
Select Map.
Toggle Popularity Map On/Off.
High Contrast
Most popular roads and trails will be highlighted as black lines. As a road or trail declines in popularity, they will be displayed progressively lighter shades of gray. There are four classification shades in total. This option is enabled by default.
