Garmin® Transducer Pin Connection and Considerations by Device

Garmin® manufacturers and has manufactured a variety of marine devices which support displaying image producing SONAR using either a built-in or an external SONAR module if compatible. External SONAR modules can in some cases be the built-in SONAR module of another compatible chartplotter. Some chartplotters models may require an external SONAR module, while others may be incompatible. All models require a compatible transducer with the appropriate pin layout to connect to the built-in or external SONAR module.

The actual transducer pin connection on the fishfinder, chartplotter or SONAR module varies. Older fishfinders, chartplotters and SONAR modules utilize our 6-pin connection. Newer model devices a feature 4-pin, 8-pin, 12-pin or a 21-pin connector. it is important to note that transducers and cables that connect directly up may or may not be compatible due to differences in internal wiring, internal hardware, or software. 

It is necessary to insure the transducer is compatible with the fishfinder, chartplotter or SONAR module before connecting the transducer. For more information on current model transducer compatibility see the Transducer Selection Guide.

²The LVS XDCR port is also a 12-pin SONAR port. The 12-pin LVS XDCR port is exclusively for the discontinued LVS 12 LiveScope™ real-time sonar and features a completely different pin configuration. GPSMAP® chartplotter and sonar combo units feature 3 SONAR ports (8-pin, 12-pin XDCR & a 12-pin LVS XDCR. ECHOMAP™ combination chartplotter and sounder units feature 2 SONAR ports (12-pin XDCF & a 12-pin LVS XDCR. Pin information and wiring is not available for the LVS 12 transducer. The LVS 12 transducer is not compatible with the 21-pin GLS™ 10 sonar module . Transducers with a 21-pin connector must be connected to a GLS™ 10 sonar module and for compatibility see Garmin Sonar Module Compatibility.

NOTE: Water speed is not a feature available on 12-pin SONAR ports. For more information on this see Garmin Chartplotter with 12-Pin Sonar Port Compatibility with Triducers.


21 Pin Device

    • GLS™ 10 Sonar Module

Pin information and wiring is not available for transducers that connect to the GLS™ 10 sonar module. The LVS 12 transducer is not compatible with the GLS™ 10 sonar module . 


In some cases a compatible transducer may require an adapter cable or an 8-pin or a 12-pin wire block adapter. For more information on which adapter cable to buy, see Buying Parts or Accessories Directly from Garmin.

Some transducers that are bundled with a fishfinder or chartplotter may include an adapter. The transducer included may need to be adapted up or down depending on which SONAR port is required, and compatibility needs to be verified. These transducers are not necessarily for exclusive use with the included unit and may work with other fishfinders, chartplotters, and SONAR modules.

The GSD™ 26 sonar module and GSD™ 28 sonar module which is not listed above is a bare wire solution that supports bare wire transducers as well as 4-pin, 6-pin and 8-pin transducers with additional programming and other considerations. For more information on this see the following FAQs:

    NOTE: If wiring a 4-pin, 6-pin or 8-pin transducer in to a GSD 26, the following referenced FAQs will have the correct wiring diagrams

    NOTE: Cutting a Garmin Transducer Cable is not recommend of the actual transducer when there is a connector, but using a bare wire solution to make the connection will be required with a GSD™ 26, and a solution is offered in the referenced FAQ in this note
