Benefits of Class-D Fusion® Amplifiers

Class-D amplifiers are both more compact and energy-efficient when compared to their Class-AB counterparts.

All Fusion® Apollo™ series stereos have Class-D internal amplifiers. Another benefit to the Apollo series stereos internal amplifiers are that they are 2-Ohms stable. Since all Fusion speakers are 4-Ohms each, this allows for up to two speakers to be connected per channel when wired in parallel configuration.

By lowering the overall resistance of each channel to 2 Ohms, more power goes to the speakers from the internal amplifier, but that power must be divided between the two speakers per channel.

Example:

  • at 4-Ohms per channel, output is 26 watts RMS

    • with one speaker per channel, each speaker will get the full 26 watts

  • at 2-Ohms per channel, output is 43 watts RMS

    • with two speakers per channel, each speaker will get half the 43 watts RMS which is 21.5 watts RMS

Since our Apollo stereos internal amplifiers have four channels of total output with each channel being stable down to 2 Ohms, this allows a single Apollo stereo to potentially power up to four pairs or eight total speakers.

The graph below gives a visual example that demonstrates the vast difference in efficiency to power output when comparing Class-D amplifiers against Class-AB amplifiers.
