Troubleshooting a Powered Mount for an Outdoor Handheld

If a Garmin outdoor handheld fails to charge, will not power on, or is shutting down while in a powered mount, check the following:

  • Check the inline fuse to confirm it doesn't need to be replaced.
  • Check the power source to ensure it is providing adequate power to the mount, or test the mount with a different power source.
  • Ensure the charging pins in the mount spring in and out freely.
  • Inspect the charging contacts on the handheld for corrosion or damage.
  • Inspect the USB cable and/or the mount for any signs of damage.
  • Check for and install any available software updates to the handheld. For instructions, refer to Help with Product Updates.

Additional Information Regarding the AMPS Rugged Mount

IMPORTANT: Garmin strongly recommends having an experienced installer with the proper knowledge of electrical systems install the AMPS Rugged Mount to your vehicle. Incorrectly wiring the power cable can result in damage to the vehicle or battery and can cause bodily injury. If you experience any issues with the device not powering on or charging when placed in the mount, it is best to take it to an experienced installer to verify the installation, and to make any necessary adjustments.

  • Charging temperature range for handhelds that use the AMPS Rugged Mount is 0° to 45°C (32° to 113°F) and are not designed to charge outside of this range.
  • Voltage is only applied to the pins of the AMPS Rugged Mount for the Montana 7xx series when the mount detects that a device has been inserted in the cradle.
  • The mount should not be altered in any way when being installed, such as cutting the audio jack or removing the junction "brick".
  • All wires that are not utilized (including the Audio Jack) should be insulated.
