Interference Between Older and Newer Dog Tracking Handhelds

Newer dog tracking devices use a channel number system that is different from the older Astro® 220 and Astro® 320 series Comm. ID system. This can cause interference. To resolve this, you can change the dog's ID number to one that is not in use already, or put more distance between you and other hunters within radio range.

  • Older Astro 220 and Astro 320 Dog Tracking Handhelds
  • Newer Alpha® 200, Alpha® 200i, Alpha® 300, Alpha® 300i,  Alpha® 100, and Astro® 430 Dog Tracking Handhelds

A Newer Model Dog Tracking Handheld is Conflicting With Older Handhelds in the Area

If you are using a newer Alpha 100, Alpha 200i, or Astro 430 handheld the chart below describes how Alpha and Astro 430 system channel numbers are related to Astro 220 and 320 Comm. IDs.

Example: Alpha and Astro 430 system ID numbers are followed by a dash and a number (e.g. 1-0). Since channel 1 dash 2 (1-2) meets Astro 220 and 320 ID's 3 and 8, these Comm ID's cannot be used as they would cause interference. The Alpha or Astro 430 ID will need to be changed to another channel or dash. For example, change the ID to 1-4 or 2-0.

An Older Handheld is Conflicting With Newer Handhelds in the Area

If you are using an older handheld like an Astro 220 or Astro 320, the below ID mapping chart is set up to show how Astro 220 and 320 Comm. IDs are related to Alpha and Astro 430 ID numbers.

Example: Astro 220 and 320 system Comm. ID's consist of two digits. If the ID is configured to 0 (00) or 5 (05), the Alpha or Astro 430 system ID's 1-8, 1-9, 1-10 will cause interference with the collar. The Astro 220 or 320 ID will need to be changed from 0 or 5. For example, change the Comm. ID to a 1 (01) or 6 (06).

Additional Information: Radio Frequencies and ID Numbers

The following data describes the five MURS Radio Frequencies used in the Astro and Alpha training systems. This also describes how the ID numbers and channels relate to those frequencies. This information is not exactly necessary to fix any interference, but only to describe how the older and newer systems use the five possible radio frequencies.

  • 151.820 MHz = Astro 220, 320 (Communication Settings 00 – 09) = Alpha 200i, Alpha 100, Astro 430 (Channel 1)
  • 151.880 MHz = Astro 220, 320 (Communication Settings 10 – 19) = Alpha 200i, Alpha 100, Astro 430 (Channel 2)
  • 151.940 MHz = Astro 220, 320 (Communication Settings 20 – 29) = Alpha 200i, Alpha 100, Astro 430 (Channel 3)
  • 154.570 MHz = Astro 220, 320 (Communication Settings 30 – 39) = Alpha 200i, Alpha 100, Astro 430 (Channel 4)
  • 154.600 MHz = Astro 220, 320 (Communication Settings 40 – 49) = Alpha 200i, Alpha 100, Astro 430 (Channel 5)
