What Happens if the Red Wire is Connected on the GHC 20 When Using the 7-pin cable?
The new GHC 20 autopilot control display uses a 7-pin cable that provides NMEA 0183 bare wire connections.
This cable also has black and red power wires for use with older units. The black wire is the common ground for the NMEA 0183 wires as well.
The GHC 20 is powered through the NMEA 2000 connection and does not need the black and red wires for power. The black wire is still needed if a NMEA 0183 device is going to be used with the display.
If the black wire is used and the red wire gets connected to power also, some or all of these issues can occur:
- The system will pass dockside and pass autotune in spite of the engines barely moving when checking steering direction in Dockside. When the pilot is "Engaged" the Shadow Drive trips "You Have The Helm" and has to be Disabled to run the autopilot.
- When the Engage is pressed, it takes 5-7 seconds for GHC 20 to actually engage.
- The autopilot will not run straight to a heading and will not keep a course.
- Cannot input gain changes in Autopilot Tuning if trying to do hand or fine tuning
Disconnect the red wire, and the autopilot should function normally again.
