Automotive Device Not Detected by Garmin BaseCamp™ on a Mac Computer

USB communication issues can prevent your Garmin device from being detected by Garmin BaseCamp™.

Verify your Device Displays the Connection Icon

Your device should display an icon when connected to a computer.

These icons vary, but some examples include:

Garmin devices plugged into a computer tower via USB cable

Connect the USB cable directly to your Garmin device and not the mount (USB ports on mounts are for charging only)

USB Ports on the back of a Garmin Automotive GPS unit

Note: The device doesn't have enough power to communicate with the computer if the display is blank or only shows a Blank battery icon transparent battery icon when connected to the computer. Charge the device while driving using the vehicle power cable to ensure it has enough power.

Ensure the Mac Recognizes the USB Connection

A device will display as a removable disk drive in Finder when it is properly connected to a Mac computer.

To check whether OS X recognizes the connection:

1. Connect the Garmin device to the computer

2. Click the Finder icon on the dock

3. Click Go in the menu bar at the top of your computer screen

MAC menu bar with Go selected

4. Click Computer

MAC Go menu with Computer selected

The Garmin device will display as a disk drive icon and will generally be labeled GARMIN

Ensure that the USB port is working properly

  • Try a different USB port on your computer and/or test the USB port with a different USB device
  • Avoid connecting through a USB hub, USB extension cable, keyboard, or monitor
  • On desktop computers, use the USB ports on the back of your computer

Macs with only USB-C Ports:

Some newer Mac computers may only have USB-C or Thunderbolt ports. It is best to connect your device directly to the computer when possible. If your device has a USB-C port, you can use a USB Type C to Type C data transfer cable. Apple has a helpful support article that explains different USB types, how to identify them, and what adapters can be used: Identify the ports on your Mac and Adapters for the Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C port on your Mac.

Macs with M1 and Newer Chips and USB-C Ports:

Automotive devices with miniUSB or microUSB ports must use a USB-C to USB adapter along with the appropriate miniUSB to USB-A or microUSB to USB-A cable provided with the device.

If your device has a USB-C port, you can use a USB Type C to Type C data transfer cable.

Automotive devices listed below may need to use a USB 2.0 third-party hub in order for the Garmin device to properly detect the USB connection.
