Garmin Radar Safe Distance Mounting Considerations
Height Distance
When mounting a radar, the minimum safe height is a primary consideration to keep the crew and passengers aboard the boat safe. The radar's horizontal beamwidth should be above head height. The minimum recommended height is 8' feet above the deck and no higher than 30' feet above the water to avoid missing close targets. Garmin Radars installation manuals list minimum safe operating distance under the specifications table. The radar beam spreads vertically (see figures 1 - 12.5 above, 12.5 below), the beam must clear areas where passengers and crew are present. Objects should not be in the beam path of radar as it causes damage.
Different heights (18" inches vertical separation) are required for multiple radar antennas. Do not install GPS antennas, satellite TV antennas, or cell phone antennas in the direct beam of a radar antenna. Mount these types of antennas above or below the radar.
