Archived Track and Auto Save Information

An Archived Track and Auto Saved Activity is created from the Current Track Log to free up more space for the Current Track or Activity to continue recording without losing any data. Archiving saves the Current Track or Activity but does not clear the Current Track Log.

Archived Tracks save all of the information from the Current Track. For more information on the Current Track Log, see Related.

Auto Archive and Auto Save Settings

If more control is desired over when tracks are archived or saved, there is an option to manually do so. For instructions on changing these settings, refer to your owner's manual

For an explanation of settings you may see on your device, see below.

When Full
Automatically saves the current recording and starts a new one when the current recording is near 20,000 track points.
Daily
Automatically saves the previous day's recording and starts a new one when you turn on the device on a new day. When tracks are set to archive daily, the device will do so automatically when it believes it's needed. It is important to note that this does not necessarily mean tracks will archive within 24 hours, as may be expected. The intention is to ensure the device does not archive a track in the middle of being recorded.
Weekly
Automatically saves the previous week's recording and starts a new one when you turn on the device on a new week.
Auto
Automatically saves the current recording based on its length and the number of track points taken.
Never
Never saves the current recording automatically. When the current recording nears 20,000 track points, the device filters the active track to remove redundant points while retaining the shape and history of the recording. Unfiltered points are saved in a temporary GPX and FIT file that is saved or discarded when the recording stops.

NOTE: When importing FIT activities or GPX tracks with more than 20,000 track points, the device filters the line to fit in the device memory and improve map drawing performance, while retaining the shape and history of the recording. The FIT and GPX files retain all of their original track points.

Archived Tracks

NOTE: The information below only applies to devices with Track Manager.

Archived Tracks reside in a different location of the memory and therefore will only provide the following features:

  • View Map - Displays the track on the map page.

  • Elevation Plot - Displays the elevation plot for the track.

  • Change Name - Allows you to change the name of the track.

  • Delete - Allows you to delete the track permanently.

  • Mark Favorite - Moves it from the list of Archived Tracks to be viewed under the Current Track.

Archived Tracks can be transferred from the device to the computer for saving and viewing by using the Garmin BaseCamp™ software. Archived Tracks are not available to sync.
