How Do I Setup My Garmin Astro 900?

Before heading out with your Astro® 900 dog tracking system, we recommend that you set it up and make sure it's ready to use.

Charging

You will first want to make sure that you have good batteries in your Astro 900 handheld and that your collar(s) are properly charged1.

 Charging the collars

    • A solid red LED indicates that the collar is charging
    • A solid green LED indicates that the collar is fully charged
    • Visit the owner's manual for more information on charging

1Products containing Lithium-Ion batteries are purposely shipped with less than a full charge

Pairing

After your collars are fully charged, you can turn them on and pair them. From the Main Menu select the Dog List. If you have no collars listed or not all collars listed, you will want to pair them to your handheld.

  • If you purchased an Astro 900 / T 9 bundle with the collar should already be paired to the handheld
  • Additional collars will need to be paired

TIP: Enter the dogs in the order in which you'd like to most to see them

Select Pairing a New or Additional Collar below for steps on pairing a new collar to your handheld.

Pairing a New or Additional Collar

  1. If your collar is not paired, turn it off to start.
  2. Turn on the collar by pressing and holding the Power button until the collar beeps twice.
    • The LED on the collar should be flashing rapidly in green. It is now ready to be paired to the handheld.
  3. On the handheld:
    1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List
    2. Select Add Dog
  4. Bring the collar near the handheld, select Yes
  5. Keep the collar near the handheld until it the handheld gives you the screen to enter the dog’s name
  6. After you’ve entered the dog’s name, select Done

Acquiring Satellites

After you’ve added all the dogs you intend to add, it’s best to give the handheld and collars an unobstructed view of the sky to acquire as many satellites as possible, and to familiarize themselves with where the satellites are in the sky. On the collar when you have a good fix you'll see 3 rapid green flashes in a row from the LED.

TIP: If traveling more than a few miles away from where the handheld and collar obtained GPS connection, it is suggested that you repeat this effort again at the new location but before you use them in the field.
