Garmin Error Message "Sonar Timed Out" Explanation
The Sonar Timed Out error message usually indicates an issue with the sounder portion of the device. Garmin offers some devices that have the sounder built into the device and other devices require a remote sounder box to be connected.
The first troubleshooting step to resolve the issue is to perform a software update on the main device being used, whether this is a device that has the sounder built in or the device that the remote sounder box is connected to. See Garmin Marine Device Software Updates for more information about updating the device to the latest version.
If the message still appears, after the software update, the sounder portion of the device will need to be repaired, if a repair is still available for the device. If the device has the sounder built into the device (i.e. GPSMAP 441s), the entire device will need to be repaired. If the device has a remote sounder box (i.e. GSD 22) connected to it, the remote sounder box will need to be sent in for repair.
