How Do I Calibrate the Tacx Flow Smart Trainer?

Measurement of performance data on an indoor trainer is important. All Tacx Smart trainers are measuring speed, cadence and power. In order to have an accurate power measurement the trainer needs to be calibrated. This is done by a simple and quick spin down calibration process. It is also important to update the software on the trainer to ensure accurate power measurement.

The spin down calibration process can be triggered from Tacx Training App. The application will guide you through all the steps once the trainer is connected.

NOTE: A trainer tire is highly recommended. Make sure the rear tire is inflated to the max pressure recommendation printed on the tire before proceeding (Ex: road tire max pressure ranges from 101-116 psi).

Calibration Process

NOTE: Use the trainer on a firm, level surface. If on carpet, use a mat.

  1. Download and install the Tacx Training™ app. If the app is already installed, ensure it is using the latest update.

    • Calibration cannot be done in the Tacx Desktop App, it must be done in the Tacx Training App.

  2. Open the app and select the Settings icon.

  3. Select Device Manager.

  4. Select the Tacx Flow from the list of trainers - when all icons turn green it has been connected successfully.

  5. Select Set Up Tacx Flow.

  6. Select Calibrate.

  7. Select Calibrate Now.

  8. Follow the app on-screen instructions - start pedaling and accelerate to 18.6 mph.

  9. Once the speed reaches 18.6 mph, stop pedaling and let the wheel come to a complete stop.

  10. Upon successful calibration, observe a green checkmark and the message "Your Trainer is Calibrated".

  11. Select Finish.

  12. Select the back arrows until you reach the Dashboard of the Tacx Training app to select a movie or workout.

Why Is Calibration Required?

There are many factors (E.g.: room temperature, tire pressure, rolling resistance, etc.) influencing the power measurement. With a calibration, all these factors are measured and calculated to a single calibration value. The value is being used as a coefficient to calculate the power input of the cyclist.

How Often Should I Calibrate?

Perform a calibration when any of the following changes occur:

  • Tire pressure change

  • Pressure of roller against the tire changes

  • Temperature of the environment significantly changes

  • Tire is changed

Can I Calibrate Using a Garmin Edge Computer?

You can use your Edge bike computer to calibrate your trainer. The trainer will need to be paired to the Edge as an Indoor Trainer in order to perform the calibration.
