Using Non-Garmin/Third-Party Maps or Software with an Overlander

Garmin automotive devices are meant to be used with Garmin-provided maps. These can be purchased at garmin.com/maps. To check compatibility with your device, select the map you wish to purchase and click on Compatible Devices.

The Overlander® GPS navigator can use the Garmin Explore™ App to download multiple mapping options as well as create and manage waypoints, routes, and other data. For more information, see Topographic Map Coverage for the Overlander & Creating Waypoints and Routes in the Garmin Explore App

NOTES:

  • A Windows computer must be used for the steps below.  See Automotive Device Compatibility with Garmin Mac Applications on macOS for more information about the use of a Mac computer with the device.

  • .IMG files must be located in a "Map" folder on the microSD card and/or the device for your device to display them.

  • Garmin cannot provide support or guarantee compatibility for map products or software purchased from other companies. Garmin cannot cover the device under warranty if it becomes unusable as a result of using third-party maps or software.

  • For support of third-party map products or software, including setup, usage, and error messages, contact the manufacturer of the map or software program.

  • You may have to disable some Garmin maps for the third-party map to show on the map page of the device. Ensure the Basemap is also enabled.


To Add the .IMG Files to a MicroSD Card:

  1. Insert the microSD card into your device
  2. Connect the device to the computer with the provided USB cable
  3. Open My Computer (XP), Computer (Vista or 7), File Explorer (Win 8), or This PC (Windows 10)
  4. Open the Overlander from the Devices With Removable Storage or Devices and drives section
  5. Open the microSD card memory drive
  6. Right-click in the microSD card drive
  7. Left-click on New Folder
  8. Rename the Folder to Map
  9. Click and drag the desired .IMG files into the Map folder
  10. Disconnect the device from your computer

The .IMG files will now display under the myMaps settings on your device.


To Add the .IMG Files to the Device:

  1. Connect the device to the computer with the provided USB cable
  2. Open My Computer (XP), Computer (Vista or 7), File Explorer (Win 8), or This PC (Windows 10)
  3. Open the device drive from the Devices With Removable Storage or Devices and drives section
  4. Open Internal Storage
  5. Open the Garmin folder
  6. Open the Map folder
  7. Click and drag the desired .IMG files into the Map folder
  8. Disconnect the device from your computer

The .IMG files will now display under the myMaps settings on your device.

NOTE: A new Map folder would need to be created if the Map folder is missing within the Garmin folder. Do not use the Map folder within the .System folder.


To Verify the .IMG Files are Displaying on Your Device:

  1. Touch the Settings Gear
  2. Touch Navigation
  3. Touch Map & Vehicle
  4. Touch myMaps
  5. Enable the maps
    • The map is enabled if a checkmark is present.
    • Touch the empty box if a checkmark is missing.
