Automotive Device Calculating Routes Slowly

Some Causes for the Device Calculating Routes Slowly:

  • Trying to route to an area where there are no route-able roads.

  • Routing to an area where there are no detailed maps loaded to the device.

  • The route entered is simply too long for the device to calculate.

  • A route is created in the BaseCamp™ software and sent to a device that is not compatible.

  • The device has reached its maximum available memory for the route that is being calculated.

One of the Following Errors May Also Display:

  • "Cannot Calculate Route".

  • "Unable to Calculate Route to destination".

  • "Route Too Long".

  • "Unable to Calculate Route: No roads near destination".

  • "Route Memory Full".

  • "Route Calculation Error: Not Enough Memory Available".

See the Troubleshooting Below if the Device is Calculating a Route Slowly or Displaying an Error Message:

  1. Ensure the device is up to date using Garmin Express. See the Software section under your device in Support Center for instructions.

  2. Verify the correct map region is installed to the device by visiting the Support Center, entering your product name, and searching for "Verifying Maps Installed on an Automotive Device"

  3. If a cross country trip is entered, it may be easier to only enter the destination for just that day, rather than the whole trip. The device may have problems calculating a route over 500 miles all at once.

  4. If a route with multiple stops is entered using Trip Planner or the Routes feature, it may take longer to calculate the route depending on how many stops there are. We suggest breaking up the route into multiple legs or a different trip for each day. Note: not all devices have Trip Planner or the Routes feature.

  5. Some devices may also be affected by trafficTrends, which uses historical traffic data to optimize routes based on typical traffic conditions in the area. Steps for disabling the trafficTrends feature can be found in the owner's manual for the automotive device.

Devices that record a trip log will archive these tracks or trip logs. These files can end up being quite large if traveling across great distances.
