Using the Respiration Rate Feature on My Garmin Watch

Respiration rate describes how often you inhale and exhale in a minute. Resting respiration rates are typically between 12-20 times per minute during rest and can be around 40-50 times per minute during intense physical activity. This increase in respiration rate reflects the increased oxygen demand for producing aerobic energy. Your Average Hourly Respiration trendline is displayed in the sleep and all-day wellness metrics in Garmin Connect.

How Does My Watch Measure Respiration Rate?

Many Garmin® watches can monitor and record respiration rate and display this information from an activity data field or from the respiration widget or glance.  In addition, this information can be  analyzed from your Garmin Connect app.

NOTE: A March 2025 software update improved the responsiveness and accuracy of the respiration rate feature.  This may result in more variability (higher and lower respiration rates) compared to the previous software version.

NOTE: A Garmin heart rate strap is required for all activity types with the exception of Breathwork or Yoga activity types. This is due to activity movement that may impact the optical heart rate sensor's ability to read heart rate variability. Additionally, respiration is not available for swim activity profiles.

Why Are There Gaps in My Respiration Chart?

While viewing your daily respiration chart, you may notice gaps in your average respiration rate on the chart throughout the day, as well as significant variations in brpm on either side of these gaps. These gaps can appear because respiration readings from the wrist are less accurate when you’re in motion. To ensure that you receive the most accurate respiration data possible in your reports, the average respiration rate is omitted at these times.
