Does Garmin have any automotive GPS devices that alert you when you are going over the speed limit?

Many of Garmin's automotive devices will provide a visual alert when you exceed the speed limit. Some devices will also have the ability to emit an audible alert when the locale is set to any European country.1

Devices that currently provide an audible speed alert are as follows:

  • Camper/RV series
  • dezl series
  • LIVE 2300 series
  • nuvi 55/56
  • nuvi 57/58
  • nuvi 60 series
  • nuvi 2200 series
  • nuvi 2300 series
  • nuvi 2400 series
  • nuvi 2405 series
  • nuvi 2407 series
  • nuvi 2408 series
  • nuvi 2505 series
  • nuvi 2507 series
  • nuvi 2508 series
  • nuvi 2509 series
  • nuvi 2609 series
  • nuvi 2707 series
  • nuvi 2708 series
  • nuvi 2709 series
  • nuvi 3400 series
  • nuvi 3500 series
  • nuvi 3507 series
  • nuvi 3508 series
  • nuviCam

1If any of the above devices' locale are set to any country outside of Europe (including the United States), the device will not provide audible speed alerts. A non-European device when set to Europe locale may emit audible speed alerts, but it is not guaranteed.

To change the locale for any of the above devices:

  1. Touch Tools
    • Skip this step on some devices
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch the menu button (three horizontal lines)
  4. Touch Restore
  5. Touch Yes to confirm
  6. Select the desired locale when prompted
  7. Select the desired language when prompted

When using a European locale, the audible speed alert on the above devices may be disabled or enabled as desired.

To turn audible speed alerts on or off on the Camper/RV 660, 760, dezl 570, 760, 770, nuvi 55, 56, 57, 58, 65, 66, 67, 68, 2405, 2407, 2408 2505, 2507, 2508, 2509, 2609, 2707, 2708, 2709, 3400, 3500, 3507, 3508 series, and nuviCam:

  1. Touch Settings
  2. Touch Map & Vehicle
  3. Scroll down to Audible Speed Alerts
  4. Check or uncheck the box as necessary

To turn audible speed alerts on or off on the dezl 560, LIVE 2300 series, nuvi 2200, 2300, and the 2400 series:

  1. Touch Tools
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch Navigation
  4. Touch Car (If the device is a dezl 560, choose the relevant vehicle as necessary)
  5. Scroll down to Audible Speed Alerts
  6. Touch Enable or Disable

The following devices will display a visual alert when you exceed the posted speed limit:

  • Camper/RV series
  • dezl series
  • LIVE 1695
  • LIVE 2300 series
  • nuvi 30
  • nuvi 40 series
  • nuvi 50 series
  • nuvi 60 series
  • nuvi 1200 series (excluding the nuvi 1200)
  • nuvi 1300 series (excluding the nuvi 1300)
  • nuvi 1400 series
  • nuvi 1690
  • nuvi 2200 series
  • nuvi 2300 series
  • nuvi 2400 series
  • nuvi 2405 series
  • nuvi 2407 series
  • nuvi 2408 series
  • nuvi 2505 series
  • nuvi 2507 series
  • nuvi 2508 series
  • nuvi 2509 series
  • nuvi 2609 series
  • nuvi 2707 series
  • nuvi 2708 series
  • nuvi 2709 series

If you are going over the speed limit while using one of the above series of devices, your current driving speed will display in red text or the speed limit data field will turn red.1

Garmin does offer a free application called POI Loader that allows you to load custom points of interest to your device. These custom points of interest can include custom alerts such as speed alerts. If you are interested in creating your own custom speed alerts, you can find more information here.
