My Approach Device Is Not Found by Garmin Express
If you are seeing the message "What are you trying to add?" when trying to add an Approach® golf device in the Garmin Express™ application, or if a previously added device is NOT showing a status, this means your Garmin® device was not recognized by Garmin Express. Listed below are items to check and troubleshooting steps to try.
Check the Charging Contacts and Cable
Clean the charging contacts on the device to ensure they are clean and clear of debris or corrosion.
Try a different USB cable.
Ensure you are using a Garmin branded cable; some third-party brands of cables may charge the device, but will not necessarily be capable of transferring data so that the device can be properly recognized by the computer.
Try a different USB port.
Ensure you are plugged directly into the computer or laptop and not a USB hub.
Ensure Garmin Express Is Up to Date
Verify that the Garmin Express program is up-to-date. For more information, see Updating the Garmin Express Application Software.
Restart Your Computer and Device
Computer: Shut the computer down and leave off for 60 seconds. Power back on.
Approach Device: For steps to power cycle or restart your device, refer to your owner's manual.
Verify That the Computer Detects the Device
You can check if your computer detects the device by looking through File Explorer on Windows, or Finder on Mac. Use the key commands below to view your drives to see if the device is recognized by your computer.
Windows 8 and newer: Windows(
) key + E and select This PC.Windows 7 and older: Windows(
) key + E.Mac: Shift + Command + C.
If you see your Garmin device listed, then your computer has recognized the device. If the device is not recognized properly, Garmin applications will not see the device and/or an error message(s) may occur.
My Computer Does Not Detect the Device
Some devices can alternate between Garmin Mode and Mass Storage Mode or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) mode. When in Garmin Mode the device will charge but will not transfer data. When in Mass Storage Mode or MTP mode the device will both charge and transfer data. In order for Garmin Express to find your device it will need to enter Mass Storage Mode or MTP mode.
NOTE: Garmin devices that support music storage use Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and will not mount as a drive on a Mac computer. They can still be used with Garmin programs and applications on a Mac. To see if your device has Mass Storage Mode or MTP, refer to your owner’s manual and search for “USB Mode”.
Typically, when your device has successfully entered into Mass Storage Mode or MTP mode, the screen will display a battery charging icon, the
eject symbol, or a
USB icon. See the images below for examples of these icons:

Ensure you are using a Garmin branded cable; some third-party brands of cables may charge the device, but will not necessarily be capable of transferring data so that the device can be properly recognized by the computer.
Try a different USB port.
Ensure you are plugged directly into the computer or laptop and not through a USB hub, USB extension cable, keyboard, or monitor.
