Unable to Edit or Delete Locked inReach Contacts

When using the Garmin Messenger™ app, there are a couple of scenarios that can cause read-only contacts to be generated. These contacts will appear to be locked with no option to edit or delete them.

  • Garmin Messenger App: Under Device > Contacts, the contact may appear with Lock Symbol next to it. When selecting the contact, there will be no option to edit or delete it from the app.

  • Connected inReach® Device: The contact may appear under Contacts, but with a lock symbol and/or no option to edit or delete the contact.

Removing Locked Contacts in the Garmin Messenger App

The steps for removing a locked contact will depend on how the locked contact was generated.

Locked Contacts Appear Right After Setting up the Garmin Messenger App

If you approve the permission request for the app to access your phone's system contacts, a read-only contact will automatically be created in Garmin Messenger app for anyone in your system contact list who is also a Garmin Messenger app user. Read-only contacts created in this manner can be removed by deleting the auto-generated message thread – "(Name) is on Garmin Messenger!" – associated with the contact on the Messages tab of the app.

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select Messages Word Bubbles.

    • iOS: Swipe a message thread to the left

    • Android: Select and hold on a message thread

  3. Select Delete or Trash Icon.

To prevent read-only contacts for other Garmin Messenger app users in your system contacts from automatically being added as contacts, you can uninstall the app, then when reinstalling and setting up the app again, choose to deny the permission request for the app to access your phone's system contacts.

Locked Contact Appears After Sending a New Message

If a message is sent to one of your phone's system contacts that has not already been saved in the app, a read-only contact will be created in the app. This allows the reply message from the recipient to appear in the app as coming from the person's name rather than showing only their phone number. Since system contacts are managed by the phone, they cannot be edited or deleted in the Garmin Messenger app. If read-only contacts created in this manner need to be removed from the app, you can uninstall the Garmin Messenger app, then when reinstalling and setting up the app again, choose to deny the permission request for the app to access your phone's system contacts.

Why Can I Not Edit My Own Contact Information?

It is normal for there to be a lock symbol next to your own personal contact in the app or no option to edit the contact. Since your personal contact is generated from your account information, it cannot be edited or removed. This contact contains your email address, mobile phone number, and inReach address, and is added to your inReach device after syncing.

Additional Troubleshooting

If you still have contacts that are locked, or otherwise cannot be removed after following the steps above, you can try the following troubleshooting steps.

  1. Factory reset your inReach device:

  2. Uninstall the Garmin Messenger app.

  3. Reboot your phone.

  4. Reinstall the Garmin Messenger app.

  5. Pair and allow your inReach device to sync.

  6. Check for the unwanted contacts in the app, and on your inReach device.
