Traveling to Another Country with a Garmin Automotive Device
If you plan to travel to a foreign country with your Garmin automotive device, the following links can help you get started.
If traveling to Europe, and if your device was preloaded with European mapping, it is not necessary to purchase a European map through the Garmin website. Update the device's European maps in the Garmin Express™ software. Be advised that this device will not be able to install the entire European map.
To Purchase and Install Maps of a Different Country:
- Purchasing and Downloading a New Map Region for an Automotive Device.
- Note: Due to hardware limitations, this device is not compatible with purchasing any new mapping of Europe, including regional maps. It is also not compatible with the mapping of China.
Tip: After verifying that the purchased map region has been installed to the device, it helps to simulate a route in that region to make sure that the map works, and to become familiar with finding locations in that region before your trip. When searching for a location with an Anglicized name, use the local spellings of cities and street names rather than the Anglicized name, e.g. ‘Firenze’ instead of Florence or ‘Korinthos’ instead of Corinth.
To Find Locations, Save Locations and Simulate Routes:
If traveling overseas or flying to the area where you plan to travel, the device will need some time to acquire satellites after arriving.
To Acquire Satellites:
In an area with a clear view of the sky, turn the device on and remain stationary.
Allow 3-5 minutes for the device to acquire satellites.
It may be helpful to connect the device to power during this time to prevent it from entering “sleep” mode.
When the device has acquired satellites, it will automatically use the correct map. For more information about this, see the following FAQs.
