Import Data From Fitbit® to Garmin Connect

Garmin offers the ability for users to import their data from Fitbit into their Garmin Connect™ account. This article will provide instructions to import the following data:

  • Historical body composition data

    • This includes weight, BMI, and fat percentage data.

  • Activity data

    • This includes calories burned, steps, distance, active minutes, and floors climbed.

  • Fitbit Activity Minutes

    • Fitbit activity minutes will be converted over to Garmin Intensity Minutes.

Any data not listed above will not be able to be imported into Garmin Connect. Choose an option below to reveal instructions to follow.

Importing Your Fitbit® Activity Data and Body Data

  1. Export your data from Fitbit®.

  2. From a web browser sign into your Garmin Connect account.
  3. Select cloud with upward arrow icon in the top right corner of the page.

  4. Select Import Data.

  5. Select Browse.

  6. Locate and select the files exported from Fitbit®.

  7. Select Import Data.

  8. Select the units of measure that match what you used with Fitbit.

    • If the file's date formatting doesn't match, for example it's MM/DD/YY instead of MM/DD/YYYY, your data may not be uploaded successfully.

  9. Select Continue.

Your data should now be visible in Garmin Connect. During import you have the opportunity to select the units of measurement. If you would like to change the units of measurement, importing the file again and selecting the units of measurement you would like will overwrite the previously uploaded data.

I Am Getting "An Error Occurred With Your Upload. Please Try Again" Message

There are a few reasons why you could see this error when attempting to import your data. This includes:

  • If you upload Fitbit® data containing data on the same day that the account already has Garmin data.

  • Data that does not have the same date formatting throughout the file.

Generally, errors are seen when the format of the data export does not match throughout the file, or the file includes invalid characters. It is important to review the file for any inconsistences in order to correct before importing the data. Also, in the event there is wellness data on the same day, Garmin data will take precedence over Fitbit data. With some data, the date may be incorrect by a day if the time zone of the source data is different from the time zone setting in your Garmin Connect account.

"Import Complete" Message But No Data in Garmin Connect

CSV files from Fitbit require precise formatting in order to be successfully imported into Garmin Connect. Wellness data like weight recordings require a "header" at the top of the file in order to be processed.

See the example photos below for preferred formatting:

CSV Format Example If your wellness CSV from Fitbit is missing this "Body" line, the data may fail to record in Garmin Connect (Even if you get the 'Import Successful' message).

  • Wellness data requires a "Body" header (no commas)

  • Activity data like calories or steps need an "Activities" header

NOTE: The lines of data need to be distinct daily totals. Data recorded to the CSV file on a minute-by-minute basis will not be able to be processed. If you open your CSV and it contains data but no headers, you'll want to use a text editor to add either a Body or an Activities header to the file on the top line with no commas.

"Your Upload is Still Processing, Please Check Upload Status" Message

When you receive this message you may need to wait up to 24 hours for data transfer to finish processing and show in your account. We recommend importing less than 10 Fitbit files at one time to avoid longer processing times.
