Backing Up User Data on a Legacy Portable Chartplotter
NOTE: HomePort has been discontinued. For additional information regarding the discontinuation, see HomePort Application Discontinued
It is a good idea to backup user data periodically in case anything happens to the device.
Backing up User Data from a GPSMAP 162/168 Using MapSource
A program called MapSource on a PC
A cable to connect the device to the computer
GPSMAP 162 - Part number 010-10275-00 (Discontinued, no longer available from Garmin)
GPSMAP 168 - Part number 010-10276-00 (Discontinued, no longer available from Garmin)
If the PC that is being used does not have a serial port, a Serial to USB converter cable will also be required*
*If using this cable, a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows will be required
Follow the below steps to back up the user data:
Update MapSource
Connect the GPS device to the computer
Open the MapSource program
When MapSource opens, click Transfer
Select Receive from Device
When the Receive from Device box appears, make sure the device is listed. If not click on the drop-down box beside the word device and choose the attached device
If the device does not appear in the device drop down box, follow the next few steps. If it does appear skip to step 9
On the device, press the Menu button twice to access the Main Menu
Highlight the Comm tab
Press the Right arrow button to highlight the setting for Serial Data Format
Press the Enter button
Highlight Garmin Data Transfer
Press the Enter button
On the computer, press the Find Device button
Make sure everything has a check mark except for Maps. Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks should all be checked.
Click the Receive button
Click the OK button
All the data will now be backed up to the computer
Click File
Select Save
Select a destination to save the backup file and enter a file name
This will back up all of the user data to the computer. The information can be sent back to the device by clicking Transfer at the top of the screen and choosing Send to Device.

A computer running a 32-bit version of Windows
Once the above items are purchased, HomePort will need to be installed on a PC.
To back-up the user data from the device to the card, follow these instructions:
Insert the Garmin Data Card into the device
Power ON the device
Press Menu button twice to access the Main Menu
Highlight the Card tab on the left side of the screen
Press the Right arrow button one time
Press the Down arrow button four times to highlight the button called Save To Card
Press the Enter button
The information is now being backed up to the data card
Remove the data card from the device
Insert the data card into the data card programmer that is attached to the PC
Open the HomePort software
The USB Data Card Programmer should appear on the left-hand side of the HomePort software
If the USB Data Card Programmer does not appear in HomePort, the drivers for the programmer may need to be updated. For instructions on updating the drivers, please see Related Content
Right-click on the folder called All Data that appears below the programmer
Select Send To
Select My Collection
At this point, the data will be saved onto the computer and the data card can be disconnected.
Backing Up User Data from a GPSMAP 232/238 Sounder
It is a good idea to backup user data periodically in case anything happens to the device.
To backup user data a few items will need to be purchased:
Blank Garmin Data Card*
Garmin Data Card Programmer
HomePort mapping software for a PC
*128MB is the maximum size the unit will accept
Once the above items are purchased, HomePort will need to be installed on a PC.
Please note that the unit will need to be at a software version 4.20 or higher for this process to work. If the unit software is not at least 4.20, the unit will either need to update or an AC/PC cable, part number 010-10275-00, will need to be purchased and used with MapSource trip and Waypoint manager.
To back up the user data from the device to the card, follow these instructions:
Insert the Garmin Data Card into the device
Power ON the device
Press the Menu button twice to access the Main Menu
Highlight the Card tab on the left side of the screen
Press the Right arrow button one time
Press the Down arrow button four times to highlight the button called Save To Card

To backup user data a few items will be needed:

A computer running a Windows 32-bit operating system
HomePort
To back up the user data from the device to the card, please follow these instructions:
Insert the Garmin Data Card into the device
Power ON the device
Press and hold the ADJ MENU button until the Main Menu appears
Highlight the Card tab on the left side of the screen
Press the Right arrow button one time
Press the Down arrow button four times to highlight the button called Save To Card
Press the Enter button
The information is now being backed up to the data card
Remove the data card from the device
Insert the data card into the data card programmer that is attached to the PC
Open the HomePort software
The USB Data Card Programmer should appear on the left-hand side of the HomePort software
