Map Legend for Outdoor Handhelds
Most paper maps come with a legend to describe certain features of the map.
As there are many map options available for our Garmin outdoor handhelds, they do not have a specific map legend to explain all of the possible symbols and information they can display.
Some items on the map will display a name next to them to explain what they are:
Our handhelds also have a built-in map legend that allows you to select any item (point of interest, symbol, or feature) on the map, and it will tell you what that item is. You can find the steps for this process below.
Viewing Item Details from the Map
Steps will vary depending on the type of handheld being used.
Non-Touchscreen Handhelds
NOTE: All screenshots are from an eTrex® 32x outdoor handheld. The map and options may look different on your specific device.
Access the Map page.
Using the toggle or arrow buttons, move over a feature.
The top of the map will display the name of the feature:
If you want to see more information, select it by pressing in on the toggle or Enter.
Multiple options for the same area may display at the top of the map (see below). Select an option from the list.
You should now see additional details such as coordinates, distance and elevation (see below).
Touchscreen Handhelds
NOTE: All screenshots are from an Oregon® 700 outdoor handheld. The map and options may look different on your specific device.
Access the Map page.
Swipe on the map to move it, then touch a feature.
A pushpin may appear on the map, this indicates what is currently selected.
The top of the map will display the name of the feature:
If you want to see more information, select it by touching the name.
You may also see next to it, this means there are multiple options for the same area (see below). Select it and then select an option from the list.
You should now see further details such as coordinates, distance and elevation (see below).
