Connecting an AIS receiver to a GPSMAP 620/640

Your GPS has the capability of interfacing with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver which is a basic transponder installed on a boat that transmits a signal containing information including its name, call sign, type, and position. The two devices have to be interfaced together (please reference the owners manuals of both devices for wiring instructions). The communications port that will be used on the GPSMAP 620/640 will need to be configured to NMEA High Speed.

To Configure to NMEA High Speed:

  1. Select Configure for the home page
  2. Select Communications
  3. Choose the NMEA port that will need to be configured.
  4. Select NMEA High Speed

The device will then be configured to be NMEA High Speed. Once the devices are connected, communication should be established and AIS targets can be displayed on the device.
