Garmin Express Displays a Server Error Message
There may be an issue with your internet connection or your computer's settings if the Garmin Express™ software displays one of the following errors:
We are unable to add this device because our servers are unavailable at this time.
Sorry, we're having a problem communicating with our servers.
These messages may occur for automotive GPS navigators that have been deactivated upon customer agreement when upgrading to a newer device. These devices cannot be reactivated. This does not apply to devices that have been associated with an inReach account.
Follow the Troubleshooting Steps Below:
Ensure That Garmin Express Software is Up to Date
Update Garmin Express to the current version.
- See How Do I Install Garmin Express Software? to install the latest version if the update fails.
Ensure the Internet Connection Meets the System Requirements for Garmin Express Software
A high-speed Internet connection is required. Garmin Express is not intended to be used with mobile broadband (such as MiFi, AirCard, or cell phone tethering), satellite, fixed wireless, or dial-up Internet connections.
For detailed information, see the FAQ Internet Connection Restrictions that can Prevent the Successful Download of Maps.
Reset the Network Hardware
Shut down the computer and reset the network hardware by unplugging the router and/or modem.
After a minute, plug the router and/or modem back in to restart it and turn the computer back on and try using Garmin Express software again.
Check the Date and Time Settings on the Computer
Incorrect date and time settings on the computer can cause communication errors between Garmin Express software and the Garmin servers. Verify the date, time, and time zone settings are correct on the computer.
Temporarily Disable Internet Security/Firewall
Although most security software will not interfere with Garmin Express software, some security software (such as software that is used on work computers or in a business environment) may cause this error.
If possible, try temporarily disabling the software.
If you cannot disable it, it will be necessary to use a different computer.
If disabling fails to resolve the issue, you can set up an exception for Garmin Express.
See Garmin Fleet Updater and Garmin Express Network Requirements for more information.
Check the Proxy Settings on the Computer
Incorrectly configured proxy and/or LAN settings may affect the connection between the Internet and Garmin Express. Verify the Proxy Settings are Correct on a Computer.
Disable Virtual Private Network (VPN)
If applicable, disable any VPN that is in use. If this is not possible, use a different computer and/or network connection.
