Verifying the Garmin Autopilot System is Fully Bled

To verify the hydraulic steering system is fully bled after installing a Garmin Autopilot Pump, steer the boat. Does the helm feel normal? Does the rudder respond normally?  If air is still in the lines, it will compress and lead to noticeable degradation in steering.  This would be felt through the helm as turned it suddenly loses pressure or feels like it's sticking.  It can also be seen in the motor, not responding or slow in responding when turned.

During the Verify Steering Direction step in the autopilot setup, run the steering system hard over with the autopilot pump. If there is no air in the system, the autopilot will show a "Pump Stall" error message a few seconds after steering the system's hard over the position. If the Pump Stall message is not received, there is still air in the lines.

Refer to the instructions from the hydraulic steering system manufacturer for information on bleeding the hydraulic system. If the vessel has a more complex hydraulic system, multiple helms, long hydraulic lines that run up and down, it is recommended to use a power purge. The Garmin Autopilot pump should be treated as the lowest helm in the system when bleeding the boat's hydraulics. Refer to the Installation manual of the autopilot pump for bleeding instructions for the specific Garmin pump. Obtain a copy of the installation manual here.
