WatchMate® Compatibility with VHF/DSC Radio

Yes, the WatchMate® WMX850, WatchMate Vision® , and XB-8000 are compatible with the VHF/DSC radio over NMEA. Some things to note:

  • The WatchMate's baud rate on its NMEA output will default to 38400. Typically a radio device will have its input rate default to 4800, and it will need to be adjusted to match the other

  • At 4800, the WatchMate doesn't send out AIS data on the NMEA port. It does send GPS data and other NMEA data received from different ports such as USB or NMEA input ports

  • There is an automatic DSC calling feature on the WatchMate. However, this has only been confirmed to work with the ICOM products. Not all manufacturers have implemented public interface features. Automatic DSC calling is automatically placed from the WatchMate with two button clicks. There is no harm in trying this feature out with the VHF/DSC, but it is not guaranteed to work, for it's not an ICOM radio

  • Hook up the NMEA input port to try the DSC Calling feature or send NMEA output from the VHF/DSC to another port on the WatchMate. All NMEA data received on the input port is echoed on the USB port and Wi-Fi* port (*Vision and XB-8000 only)
