By design, US TOPO v 3.02 requires the original CDs to be in the disc drive to function. This is because the map image files are not copied to the hard drive during installation. This is how the product is intended to work. If necessary, the maps may be installed to the hard drive using an unsupported alternative method. This alternate method is provided as a possible workaround and is not supported by Garmin since unforeseen issues can occur causing the maps to not work properly.

*Note: BaseCamp will not display US TOPO v 3.02 unless the alternate install has been performed.

Before the alternate installation, first uninstall US TOPO from the computer. To uninstall:

  1. On the keyboard, press the Windows Key + R.
  2. In the text box, type Control Panel.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program (Category View).
  5. Right click on US TOPO v 3.02.
  6. Click Uninstall.

Once the data is uninstalled, the contents of all three discs must be copied to the computer's hard drive. To copy the content:

  1. On the keyboard, press the Windows Key+E.
  2. Open the C: drive.
  3. Open the Garmin folder.
  4. Press CTRL+SHIFT+N on the keyboard to create a new folder.
  5. Change the name of the New Folder to US TOPO.
  6. Press the back arrow to go back to the main Windows Explorer menu.
  7. Insert disc one in the drive. If it auto starts, cancel or exit the install.
  8. Right click on the drive itself and select Open.
  9. Press Ctrl + A on the keyboard to select all the files and folders.
  10. Press Ctrl + C on the keyboard to copy all the files and folders.
  11. Open the newly created US TOPO folder and press Ctrl + V on the keyboard to paste the files.
  12. Repeat steps 7-11 for discs two and three.

After all three discs have been completely copied to the US TOPO folder, install the program. To install:

  1. Remove any US TOPO discs from the disc drive.
  2. Open the US TOPO folder.
  3. Run Setup.exe.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

When the installation begins, the installer may display a message about connecting to the internet to update the GPS device. If this occurs, select NO. When asked to confirm, select YES.

After the installation is complete, ensure that MapSource is up to date. The latest version of MapSource may be obtained at

Now that US TOPO has been successfully installed to the hard drive, the map images will be used from the US TOPO folder and not from the CDs.

*Note: If the US TOPO folder is moved or deleted, the maps will no longer function.
